Scam Threats We Detect

Vorasense protects against 20+ scam categories. Learn how each one works — and how we catch them.

Romance Scams

Scammers create fake profiles on dating sites or social media, then build emotional relationships over weeks or months. They use love bombing, rapid intimacy declarations, and constant messaging to create emotional dependency. Eventually they fabricate emergencies — medical bills, visa issues, travel costs — to extract money. They always avoid video calls and in-person meetings. Over 60% of victims are aged 55+.

Pig Butchering (Romance + Crypto)

The most devastating hybrid scam. It begins like a romance scam — often with a "wrong number" message — but pivots to a fake cryptocurrency investment opportunity. The scammer shows fabricated profits on convincing-looking trading platforms, encouraging larger and larger deposits. When the victim tries to withdraw, they're hit with "tax fees," "verification costs," and other pretexts. The blockchain makes recovery nearly impossible.

Family Emergency Scams

Also called "grandparent scams." Scammers impersonate a family member in crisis — car accidents, arrests, medical emergencies. They create extreme urgency and demand immediate payment via gift cards or wire transfers. AI voice cloning technology has made these scams devastatingly convincing, accurately replicating a loved one's voice from social media audio.

Phishing & Impersonation

Fake messages impersonating trusted institutions — banks, tax agencies, delivery services, tech companies. Bank login phishing is particularly dangerous: scammers trick victims into approving authentication requests that drain their accounts. Tax authority impersonation and delivery notification scams are also epidemic, with 4.5 billion scam texts sent weekly worldwide.

Investment & Crypto Fraud

Fake trading platforms that mimic legitimate exchanges like Binance or Coinbase. WhatsApp and Telegram "investment clubs" with fabricated testimonials and profit screenshots. They promise guaranteed returns of 100-1000% daily. Initial small withdrawals succeed to build trust, but larger amounts are blocked with escalating "fee" demands.

Employment & Task Scams

Fake remote job offers requiring upfront fees for equipment or training ($200-$500). Task scams promise payment for simple activities like liking videos — but require "deposits" that escalate. Fake checks for $2,500-$5,000 that bounce after victims wire funds. These variants have increased 400% since 2024, targeting job seekers, students, and parents.

Tech Support Scams

Pop-up alerts claiming virus infection or calls impersonating Microsoft, Apple, or Geek Squad support. They request remote access to install malware, then charge for unnecessary "repairs." Refund variants claim accidental overpayments and trick victims into sending money back. Americans lost $806 million to remote access scams in 2024 alone.

Sextortion

Blackmail using intimate content — real or fabricated. Scammers may create deepfake images or claim to have recorded video. They demand payment (often cryptocurrency) with threats to distribute content to contacts. This is one of the most psychologically damaging scam types, particularly affecting younger victims.

Account Takeover

Scammers request 2FA codes, login credentials, or authentication approvals under false pretenses. They may impersonate a friend whose account was "hacked" or a support representative. Once they gain access, they change passwords, drain accounts, and use the compromised identity to scam others.

Advance Fee Fraud

Classic "pay to receive" scams — lottery winnings requiring claim fees, inheritance notifications with processing costs, or government refunds needing verification payments. The promise is always the same: pay a small amount now to receive a large sum later. The large sum never materializes, but the fee demands escalate.
